The Osmium institute offers a range of analyses using the latest technologies available on the market.

Osmium-Analysis is a department of the Osmium Institute. As part of the work with osmium, the materials analysis department is also available to external customers.

The basic offerings are:

 

Material Analysis:

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of surfaces, coatings, particle analysis, contamination analysis, toxin analysis, and purity analysis. Most elements can be detected in solids as well as in liquids. Material analysis is usually used in the following areas:

Surveying and Documentation

Microscopic particles and small objects, tools, machine parts and all other types of objects and components are measured, weighed, scanned, and stored as 2D images and 3D structures.

Damage and wear can be observed and scanned at extreme resolutions. Materials from your suppliers can be subjected to an inspection.

Manufacturing allowances on a micrometer scale are accurately sampled and documented. Mapping of particles on surfaces can be done and defined particle counts are performed.

 

Laser-Based Material Analysis

Basic Services

In earlier times, photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) or secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) were the primary methods used for material analyses of surfaces. For thin-film analyses, a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray micro analysis (EDX) or infrared spectroscopy (IR/ATR) were also frequently used.

All these methods are nowadays replaced by laser-based material analysis, which allows one to work under much simpler laboratory conditions and reduces necessary material preparation. The speed and accuracy of the method are particularly substantial.

In the past, additional methods had to be used for the analysis of a surface if the material properties under one or more coatings were to be analyzed in addition to the surface.

Our task is the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the surface and composition of pure materials, alloys, ores, and mixtures.

Detectable Elements

We analyze the composition of base materials and their impurities. For this purpose, the proportions of the following elements are detected. Additionally, we can create an overview of the quantitative proportions of all contained and detected elements of the individual sample. Individual elements can be excluded as targets of the analysis if required.

H, Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, B, Al, Ga, In, Tl, C, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb, P, As, Sb, Bi, O, Se, Te, F, Cl, Br, J

Subgroup Elements:

Sc, Y, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Re, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg

Precious Metals:

Ru, Os, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ir, Ag, Au

Lanthanoids:

All quantitative results of the measurements refer in each case to a defined location on a possibly inhomogeneous sample. For this reason, the location of the sample at which the analysis took place is documented by imaging.

Alternatively, matrix checks can be drawn over the surfaces or defined areas of the sample.

Statements about the contents of non-homogenous granular samples are complex. Therefore, averages can be formed to estimate the entirety of the sample even without preparation. Alternatively, granules or parts of mixtures can be determined individually.

For all specimens, the observation depth can be decisive for measurement accuracy. We are also happy to perform profile analyses of cut specimens through the entire depth of the specimen.

The Osmium Institutes

To aid with the introduction of osmium as the last, rarest, and most valuable precious metal in the world to tangible investors, the Osmium World Database was established in cooperation with the customs agencies of the United States, Canada and Australia.

The Osmium Institutes have been established in 30 countries around the world for the purpose of properly preparing specimens for analysis. The analysis is conducted at the Osmium Institute headquarters in Murnau am Staffelsee, Germany. There, a laboratory is housed containing equipment necessary for microscopy, surface scanning, and material analysis.

Customers who wanted to pay for osmium in gold, silver or platinum had their goods analyzed using our equipment. Once analyzed and valued, they were exchanged for osmium.

As part of the expansion of activities, other analysis methods were added to our range of services offered. Today, the Osmium Institutes have state-of-the-art technology and extremely fast processes as well as exceptional service for precise and rapid analysis.

The "Osmium-Institut zur Inverkehrbringung und Zertifizierung von Osmium GmbH" serves the purpose of ensuring uniform handling in processing and trade of crystalline osmium. We offer certification services and laboratory analysis using the latest technology.

The tasks are carried out by a team of professionals who inform and train distributors. Our laboratory team has been certified by Keyence and has years of experience. They are available for contact at any time.

For private trade, the Osmium Institute provides appraisers who confirm the authenticity of osmium and verify codes. In addition, we carry out analysis and material determinations of ores, alloys, and tools, as well as jewelry and investment products.

Osmium Institutes are the point of contact for the press and television for information on osmium and its uses. They maintain an FAQ list and answer questions from all scientific and economic topics related to crystalline osmium.
